- Peter said: "I like night clubs, but I don’t like restaurants."
Peter said (that) he liked night clubs but he didn’t like restaurants.
- Mary said to Peter: "I must go to work, I can’t go to the night club with you."
Mary told Peter (that) she had to go to work and she couldn’t go to the night club with him."
- Peter said: "I am going alone!"
Peter said (that) he was going alone.
- Mary said: "Peter! You’ve eaten all my spaghetti!"
Mary told Peter (that) he had eaten all her spaghetti.
- Peter said: "I didn’t eat your spaghetti, it was the dog!"
Peter said (that) he hadn’t eaten Mary’s spaghetti – it had been the dog.
- Mary said: "It may be the dog, or it may be you!"
Mary said that it might be the dog, or it might be Peter.
- Peter said: "I’m not going to the night club, but I won’t cook spaghetti for you."
Peter said that he wasn’t going to the night club, but he wouldn’t cook spaghetti for her.
- Mary said: "Peter, I know, you don’t love me because you don’t want to cook for me!"
Mary said that she knew that Peter didn’t love her because he didn’t want to cook for her.
- Mother said: "Kids, I’ve just come back from the doctor and he wants to see you!"
Mother said that she had just come back from the doctor and he wanted to see the kids.
- Jeremy said: "I’m writing a letter to Santa because I want a new computer."
Jeremy said (that) he was writing a letter to Santa because he wanted a new computer.
